One of the most prolific reggae bands of all time, it was formed in the early 1970s in Jamaica and underwent several lineup changes to morph into the award winning group it is known for.
It was made up of Mykal rose, Sandra “Puma” Jones and Duckie Simpson and the 10 odd years the trio worked together, they produced several albums, two of them chart-topping that got the world to pay attention, culminating in a Grammy award for the album Anthem.
They worked with legendary reggae producers Sly and Robbie, whose novel sounds, helped them make a name for themselves.
Their name means black freedom in Swahili, and called for the awakening of the black man to the ills in his own society and how he was colonising himself. Their music was influenced by many things including their views on the world and religion.
Mykal Rose left the group in late 1989 to pursue a solo career after all the success they enjoyed as a group. Some fans widely speculate that this was occasioned by the fact that Puma’s cancer had gotten worse and thus they couldn’t perform as a group due to the bond they shared.
Sadly, Miss Jones passed away on 28th January 1990 from breast cancer. Duckie Simpson was left alone and fished other members to continue with the band’s legacy, to a somewhat dismal reception.
